Appropriate Technology Design and Dissemination
The
concept of appropriate technology is based on the idea that
the best technology for a given situation must be adapted to
its context. In the western world we are accustomed to an
abundance of "modern" technology that helps us meet our daily
needs, but in the context of a developing country we might
find that the infrastructure is not in place to support the
use of equivalent technologies. For instance, in the US, most
of us cook with gas or electricity, however in developing
countries supply chains and incomes prohibit widespread
adoption of these cooking methods. Technologies that achieve
equivalent goals (clean and efficient combustion), such as
biomass gasifying stoves, are available that are sustainable
in this context, and can be considered to be an "appropriate
technology".
Democratek
represents a belief in bottom up, people-centered, open
source, integrated, sustainable, and empowering solutions that
are suited to their context. The following projects are some
examples of our work undertaken in this spirit.
